Overview

British Columbia’s private sector gaming operators play a significant role in the provincial economy and their local communities. The BC Gaming Industry Association (“BCGIA”) was formed in 2015 as the unified voice of gaming operators and companies in the industry.

The aim of the Association is to provide strategic leadership for the BC gaming industry on behalf of private sector gaming operators and enhance relationships, education and advocacy through involvement with community stakeholders, government, media and the public.

BCGIA has 13 gaming operator members that own and manage 38 properties across the province that include casinos, community gaming centres, bingo, and horse racing, as well as non-gaming amenities such as theatres, hotels, conference centres, and food and beverage facilities. Our members generated over $1.9 billion in gaming revenue for BC Lottery Corporation (“BCLC”) in 2016/17.

Approximately two-thirds of gaming revenue generated through the province’s casinos, community gaming centres and bingo halls is directed to the provincial government through BCLC. The gaming business model in BC generates one of the highest returns to government in North America.

In BC, the provincial government regulates the industry to ensure a fair and safe environment, strict anti-money laundering procedures, and the provision of responsible gambling programs. BC Lottery Corporation (BCLC) has a mandate to conduct and manage gambling in a socially responsible manner for the benefit of British Columbians and contracts with private sector gaming operators, while the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch (GPEB) of the provincial Ministry of Attorney General regulates the industry.
